Colegio San Andrés was founded in 1917 by John A. Mackay, a Scottish missionary who was later responsible for the YMCA in Latin America and president of Princeton Theological Seminary. On 13th July 1917 Dr. Mackay was given permission to found the “Anglo Peruvian School” which, after rapid growth, became “Colegio Anglo-Peruano” on May 12th 1919.Because of legal requirements during the second world war the name of the school was changed to the one it bears to this day, Colegio San Andrés. Since 1930 the school has been on its present site at Avenida Du Petit Thouars 179, Santa Beatriz, Lima.

From its foundation the school has been under the auspices of the Foreign Mission Board
, now the International Mission Board of the Free Church of Scotland and has always sought to promote and maintain the Biblical world and life view embraced by the church. The aim of the school is to provide an integrated education based on the teachings of the Word of God. This is reflected in the motto of the school:

      "INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI"

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom

(Proverbs 1: 7)

The school has always endeavoured not to depart from the ideals and objectives that led to its foundation, and faithful to these same ideals the school continues working to achieve ever higher goals in the preparation of responsible young people with a healthy idealism and deep Christian commitment who will be able to take their place as responsible citizens in their society.

Many distinguished and famous people have passed through the school either as students or teachers; sometimes as both! Distinguished academics like John A. Mackay, Raúl Porras Barrenechea (historian); politicians like Luis Alberto Sanchez (Vice-President of Peru), Sandro Mariátegui (Member of Congress); writers and poets like Washington Delgado and businessmen like E. Wong , the Lau brothers and the Lindleys.Mention could also be made of Alfredo Salazar Southwell who made his mark in the world of aviation and is considered as a Peruvian hero. The list of “old boys” who have made their mark in Peruvian society is very long and honourable, but too long to mention in detail!

Today, more than ever, young people need an education that is firmly based on that wisdom whose beginning is the fear of the Lord.

We believe that it is only Biblical view of life that gives us a correct analysis of the individual and social problems facing mankind, and offers the only true hope for the future, both individually and collectively. In San Andrés we educate from a Biblical perspective. We seek to follow the path that is pleasing to God, the end of which is life. We analyse the present and the future from this world and life view and we find in it a solid base, not only for religion and morals, but also for our academic work.
